Half of all Australian adults are expected to have an entry in Thursday’s $100 million Powerball, but data suggests many won’t purchase their lotto ticket until the last minute.

Entries for draw 1420 will close at 7.30pm AEST on Thursday, an hour before the lucky numbers will be revealed here.

Queues are expected to form outside newsagencies this evening, as Australians take a crack at winning the life-changing lottery prize.

The last prize pool of this size was won by a Bankstown dad six weeks ago, but 61 minutes before entries closed, The Lott said it saw a surge in sales.

“On that occasion, the peak of sales was at 6.29pm on the day of the draw,” The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said.

“More than 8,227 tickets were sold in a single minute.

“Our best advice to Aussies vying for a chance to win this mammoth, multi-million-dollar prize is to get in early and don’t leave purchasing your entry until the last minute.”

‘Iconic’ Australian tourism business up for sale

Several generous Queensland locals outside a newsagency on Thursday morning told 7NEWS how they would spend the money if they pocketed the jackpot.

“I would share it with my family,” one woman said. “I’ve got nine grandsons, one granddaughter, and now three great-grandsons.”

“I think I would support the people around me,” another said. “I’d give it all away to friends,” another said.

Other plans were more immediate. “I would buy a jumper,” one T-shirt wearing man said. “I’ve already drafted my resignation for the boss, so sorry about that, Rob.”

The Lott spokesperson James Eddy said: “As long as you’ve got a ticket in your hand before the draw closes at 7.30pm AEST on Thursday night, you’re in with a chance to win.”

“If just one person scores the entire $100 million prize on Thursday night, they’ll receive a substantial boost to their bank account just in time for the new financial year.”

They could potentially be the ninth division one winner of 2023 and the second-biggest Australian lottery winner ever, bringing the annual winning total to $254 million.

Half of the winning entries to date in 2023 have been PowerHit entries, The Lott confirmed. That is the entry which guarantees the “all-important” Powerball number you need to win division one.

While QuickPick tickets secured the most jackpot prizes last year, individually selected numbers have been more auspicious in 2023.

“Interestingly, five of the eight Powerball division one winning entries of 2023 to date have been marked entries, where people have selected the numbers on their ticket.”

And while Powerball is a game of chance, 17, 7, 9, 2 and 28 are the game’s most frequently drawn numbers, along with Powerball numbers 3 and 19.

The numbers 31, 33, 34, 15 and 6 with Powerball numbers are 14 and 16 are the least frequently drawn.
